What is an electric bike and how does it work?

An electric bike, or e-bike, is a bicycle equipped with a motor and battery that provide assistance while you pedal. The motor makes cycling easier, particularly when travelling uphill or over longer distances. Learn more about how different features work in our electric bike buying guide.

Are electric bikes legal on Irish roads?

Yes. Electric bikes are legal on Irish public roads when they meet the relevant requirements, including a maximum continuous rated motor power of 250W and motor assistance that cuts off when you stop pedalling or reach 25 km/h. These compliant e-bikes are treated like conventional bicycles and do not require registration, motor tax, insurance or a driving licence.

Do I need a licence or insurance to ride an electric bike in Ireland?

No. You don't need a driving licence, insurance or registration for a compliant pedal-assisted e-bike with a maximum continuous rated power of 250W and assistance limited to 25 km/h. More powerful or throttle-operated vehicles may be classified as e-mopeds and have different legal requirements.

Where can I legally ride an electric bike in Ireland?

Compliant electric bikes can be used on public roads, cycle lanes and bus lanes where cycling is permitted. They cannot be ridden on footpaths, pedestrian-only areas or motorways. Riders must follow the same road rules as conventional cyclists.

Can I buy an electric bike through the Bike to Work Scheme in Ireland?

Yes. Eligible employees can purchase qualifying electric bikes through the Irish Bike to Work Scheme, with a tax exemption limit of €1,500 for e-bikes and €3,000 for qualifying cargo e-bikes, including approved safety equipment. Your employer must participate in the scheme and purchase the bike on your behalf. Visit our Bike to Work Scheme page to learn how to request a quotation.

How much does an electric bike cost in Ireland?

Electric bike prices in Ireland vary depending on the brand, battery capacity, motor, frame and additional features. Budget-friendly models may cost under €1,000, while premium electric bikes can cost considerably more.

What is the best electric bike to buy in Ireland?

The best electric bike depends on your budget, riding distance, terrain and storage needs. Folding e-bikes are useful for smaller spaces, commuter bikes suit everyday travel, and mountain e-bikes are designed for more demanding terrain.

How far can an electric bike travel on one charge?

Electric bike range varies depending on battery capacity, assistance level, terrain, rider weight and weather conditions. Some models are designed for shorter city journeys, while long-range e-bikes offer larger batteries for extended rides. Manufacturer range estimates are a useful starting point, but actual distance may vary. Browse our long-range electric bikes to compare models.

Are folding electric bikes suitable for commuting?

Yes. Folding electric bikes can be a practical choice for commuters who need compact storage at home or work. They're particularly useful for people living in apartments or with limited space. Consider the bike's folded dimensions, weight and battery range before buying. Explore our folding electric bikes to find a model that suits your commute.

What is the difference between an electric bike and an e-moped?

In Ireland, a standard road-legal e-bike has a maximum continuous rated motor power of 250W and provides assistance only while pedalling, up to 25 km/h. More powerful or throttle-operated electric two-wheelers may be classified as L1e-A or L1e-B e-mopeds, depending on their power, speed and operating system. E-mopeds require registration, motor tax and a motorcycle helmet. Driving licence and insurance requirements vary by category. Check the Road Safety Authority's guidance on e-bikes and e-mopeds before purchasing a higher-powered model.
